Vedad Tek’s Notebooks: The Preoccupations of an Architect
This exhibition contains 10 of Vedat Tek’s surviving notebooks mostly from 1930s which reflect the projects he was engaged on at the time and the problems he had. It is possible to establish for which building some of the designs, plans and details were executed. Others were probably preparations for future work, or designs for projects already executed and typological sketches for his works.
A large part of the notebooks consists of estimated costs for materials and labour of the works in hand. These accounts are, of course, very interesting to researchers
in shedding light on the costs and technology of more than 80 years ago.
The names and addresses of his foremen and telephone numbers of various people are to be found in Vedad Tek’s notebooks, which also reflect other problems he had during the building process apart from keeping count of debits and credits. In these notebooks one finds the accounts for household expenses he incurred as the ‘father of the family’, as well as the names of medicines. Additionally there can be found some short compositions, sketches and portraits in a childish hand, some of them might be drawn by his granddaughter Nermin. Therefore researchers should be careful in detecting the original Vedad Tek handwriting and drawing, as notebooks have been used by other family members.
