"At the beginning of my professional career, I first began to use a notebook, generally size A4 or A5, in meetings. Notes in these sketchbooks recorded dates, information about the supply depot, and details I needed to refer to later. However useful a computer may be, or any technological machine, I don't think these can ever take the place of the practical uses of notebook and pencil. I take care to see that the notebook I take with me on journeys or, when necessary, to the depot, is of the kind that has a hard cover and will wear well. It also has to be easy to carry so that I can take it with me everywhere to use whenever I need to make a visual record. If I have to categorize my aims when using my sketchbook, I can summarize these by saying I record the size and shape of any space which has a meaningful attraction for me when I am travelling, or the details of a piece of furniture, as well as certain figures or designs, in order to make use of this graphic record in the future. Apart from this, I generally record my first ideas for a design in my sketchbook. Some of these are projects which never came to fruition. Sketches of projects which have been realised give me a great feeling of excitement when I examine them after the project has been carried out, particularly those sketches which show my first ideas ."
