Temelli (Samutlu) Model Village

Early Republic’s settlement policies of 1920s aimed and built villages along rivers and other natural sources and that were easy to reach. The "Model Villages" built for the exchanged population usually had grid plans and hosted 50 houses, by means of which the size and order of those settlement units were kept under control. "Temelli (Samutlu) Model Village", built for exchangees from Bulgaria with a law dated 1 July 1931, is an interesting and first example of the circular planned "Ideal Villages of Republic", designed by General Kazım Dirik later in 1940s.

The exhibition is based on the research project run by Ali Cengizkan and Didem Kılıçkıran carried out at the MArch studios of the METU Faculty of Architecture in the scope of Arch 713. The research focuses on the socio-cultural, architectural and historical development of the settlement unit and is based on archive scanning, on site building studies, oral history and ethnographic methods. The research and the exhibition has already given way to initiating a local museum in Temelli Model Village.
