SEDAT CETINTAS DRAWINGS

Curator: Derya Nuket Ozer Sedat Cetintas was one of the first graduates of the Academy of Fine Arts. Although he was responsible for various architectural projects his real interest lay in research on buildings of the Ottoman period and preservation of the Turkish architectural heritage. He played an active role in the foundation of the Committee for the Protection of Historical Works and Monuments formed on the orders of Ataturk. Sedat Cetintas, like Celal Esad Arseven and Ali Saim Ulgen, left extremely valuable data as a result of the work carried out in the documentation of the architectural heritage, which ensured the survival to our own day of some extremely valuable data while at the same time laying the foundations of a tradition of conservation. Cetintas produced the plans of Early Ottoman buildings in Bursa, tohgether with a number of buildings in Istanbul such as the Sokullu, Suleymaniye and Sehzade Mehmet mosques, tombs of Mahmud II and Selim II and various buildings of the post-classical period. The importance of these drawings lies in their having been prepared with quite extraordinary photographic accuracy. Some of these have been published under the title "Turkish Architectural Monuments Early Ottoman Works in Bursa" (1946) and "Turkish Architectural Monuments - Murad I and Bayezid I Buildings of the Otoman Period in Bursa" (1951). Cetintas is known to have produced a total of 195 drawings, 110 of which are preserved in the Istanbul Technical University Faculty of Architecture archives. These drawings, made available to researchers in the Museum of Architecture, will be collected and published in book form by the Istanbul Technical University Press.
