ARCHITECT KEMALEDDIN: A LIFE AT ONE OF HISTORY'S TURNING POINTS (1870-1927)
The Chamber of Architects created a new category in the 2007 International Architectural Awards. The first architect in this new category aimed at commemorating the work of important Turkish architects who are no longer living with various events over the course of a year is Architect Kemaleddin. Among these events is the exhibition Architect Kemaleddin: A Life at a Turning Point of History. The Museum of Architecture has given space to this exhibition, the product of meticulous research, in its pages for the purpose of reaching a wider audience. Architect Kemaleddin: A Life at a Turning Point of History was prepared by Prof. Dr. Afife Batur. The exhibition consists of two main sections. The first section is an outline of the life and works of Architect Kemaleddin, and the second section contains architectural readings examining the architecture of Kemaleddin according to building typology. The aim of the exhibition is to show his identity, open to different readings on subjects ranging from the design of Architect Kemaleddin to his thought production, and his organisational works to his photographic documentation, as well as to introduce this important architect in the history of Turkish architecture to people outside the architectural environment. The Museum of Architecture has previously presented to visitors a large section of the archive of Vedad Tek, including his notebooks. Thus the names of two important architects of the same era with a common understanding of architecture are commemorated side by side in our museum; Architect Kemaleddin and Vedad Tek. Our Vedad Tekexhibition includes unique documents, presents documents which emphasise important social and political questions relating to the transition era from empire to republic and points such as the architect as human being, the architectural design process and so on and leaves the visitors to make their own evaluations of these documents that can be read in a variety of ways. The Architect Kemaleddin exhibition is based on the reading of the curator of the exhibition. On this occasion, we are presented with the evaluations of an esteemed researcher of Turkey, Afife Batur, on Architect Kemaleddin. To remain in keeping with the unique concept of the exhibition, we convey the panels of the exhibition as they appear. It is our intention to present new exhibitions with documents relating to Architect Kemaleddin’s life, architectural process and its turning points.
