ANCIENT THEATRES of ANATOLIA
|

|
The influence of the theatre as an unchanging part in ancient cities, as a place for society to gather, and as one of the oldest art forms, has been carried through to the present day in diverse but related fields of study. Theatre architecture has also experienced a transformation in relation to both the development of theatre as a branch of art and technological progress. Around 150 amphitheatres are known to have existed in the ancient period of Anatolia, which hosted Greek and Roman civilizations. Scientific excavations have been conducted in a number of these. Some of the theatres are still intact, and a few of them, such as Aspendos Theatre, have been preserved in a condition that allows them to be used in the present day for performances on a grand scale. A great number of theatres have partially survived until today. Some insight has been gained concerning these structures through random excavations conducted before the 19th century and later by scientific teams. Some theatres, however, remain practically unknown. The exhibition "Ancient Theatres of Anatolia" is based on a study conducted by Yaşar Yılmaz, who travelled around Turkey and made an analysis of these structures from the perspective of their engineering features, primarily in terms of their acoustic solutions. The resulting research has been published in a book of the same title by YEM Publications. The exhibition presents 117 different theatre structures with their general structural qualities. Various factors, such as the transformation of the art of theatre during the transition from the Greek theatre to the Roman theatre as well as technological innovations, necessitate a more thorough work in which these changes are documented on a theatre by theatre basis. The goal of this exhibition is to convey the extensive inventory of the ancient theatres in Turkey. The Museum of Architecture
