A SULTAN'S TITLE DEED AND TWO WOMEN'S BUILDING DOCUMENTS

Prof. Husamettin Aksu Three documents from Ottoman times... A sultan's title-deed, a building permit and a building costs documents of two ladies. The first document in the exhibition belonged to Sultan Abdulhamid II. He was the first sultan to have title deeds to his own personel property. The historical background and the statement referring law of inheritance makes it interesting. The second document is dated 1922 and is an Offical Licence for Building and Repairs. It was issued to Şayeste Hanim, a lady of private means, so that she could have a wall repaired. The headings included in the form, clauses printed on the back concerning Construction Law, the juxtaposition of words just beginning to emerge in the architectural terminology are interesting features of this document. The last document was given to a woman who wished to build a small building and is a permission for exemption of building taxes due to her poor economic situation.
Sultan Abdulhamid II's Title Deed

This title deed of Sultan Abdulhamid II documents possession of a state farm in Préveza (in today's Greece) passing from state ownership to the Sultan. Wall Repair Permit

The document dated 1922 is an Offical Permit issued to Sayeste Hanim for the repair of a garden wall. On the front page exists detailed information about the technical properties of the building and taxes to be paid. On the back page the concerning paragraphs of Construction Law have been printed. Permission for Exemption of Building Taxes

Document, dated 1910 was given to Habibe Hanim who wished to transform her stable to a house. It is a permission for exemption of building taxes due to her poor economic situation.
