TURKISH ARCHITECTURE IN THE REPUBLICAN PERIOD
1970's up to the Present
From the Seventies onwards examples of pluralism, affected by post modernism and foreign influences, become seen more often. Late Modernism and Post- Modernism which spread through the West in the Seventies, began to be accepted in Turkey between 1980 and 1990. Architects appeared who followed peak Western trends such as Late Modernism . Postmodernism , and Deconstructivism
Although some works here and there enjoyed a success, in general due to economic and social turbulance, Turkish architecture could offer few solutions to the rapid but uneven population development and the cultural problems which ensued. The belated start of an industrial revolution as well as the extreme rapidity of population growth and migrationto the cities, resulted in unplanned, disorganized, dense and confused urbanization The great need for housing, lack of necessary economic and administrative regulations, created a build/sell arrangement, cowboy constructions, illegal building and overnight shacks which resulted in an anonymous and unauthorized form of architecture. Political compromises and corruption in addition to the on-going speculation in the urban use of land made it impossible to keep environmental values or urban unity in respect to building construction. Thus, this affected the aesthetic value of cities where the chaotic appearance of urban areas in which unorganized building, lacking in either identity or character, prevails, with perhaps a few isolated good buildings as the exceptions
Recently, in Turkey as in other countries, the negative effects of early globalization, which has led to an erosion of ethic values, has been seen in architecture. This has particularly affected touristic buildings but other fields share this conscious or unconscious experimentation which is creating architectural mayhem. The insufficient background and education level of the property owner play an important role in this disorder. They often invite undistinguished foreign architects with no knowledge of local conditions and contractors to design everything from simple dwellings to important complexes. One of the main obstacles to good architecture in Turkey is the disorder in cultural values
