On 24th July, 1908, it was not so much a 2nd Constitutional Period as ‘liberty’ that was declared. Joy reigned supreme everywhere. The Kanun-i Esasi (1876 Constitution) was accepted.
The social dynamics that had been held under restraint for hundreds of years sprang into action. Political parties were formed. Associations were formed. There were strikes. In the first two years, more than 300 newspapers and magazines were published. New schools were opened. A delayed modernity project was taking shape 10 years before the end of a 600 year historical era.
1909: Abdülhamid II was dethroned. Then there was the oppressive military regime of the Union and Progress Party. Then the Balkan Wars and hundreds of thousands of people pouring out onto the streets were the steps heralding that great joy.
1914: Then the rest. The First World War and Collapse. Difficult years...
