ARCHITECT KEMALEDDIN: A LIFE AT ONE OF HISTORY'S TURNING POINTS (1870-1927) |
1913-1917 Sultan Mustafa III Primary School Uskudar
It was built in the place of Ayazma Mosque and the wooden school building constructed along with it by Sultan Mustafa III in 1757-1760. Designed by Kemaleddin Bey in 1913, the building was not completed until 1917 due to war.
The three storey, six class roomed brick arch school has a simple plan. This simplicity is also reflected in the facades. The profiles tracing the pointed arches of the ground floor windows connect at the level of the joist hangers creating a continuous line. The chain of profiles surrounding the rectangular windows of the upper floor is a pattern typical of Foundation schools and of the era.
