ARCHITECT KEMALEDDIN: A LIFE AT ONE OF HISTORY'S TURNING POINTS (1870-1927) |
1913 Medreset-ul Kuzat Beyazıt, Istanbul
Kemaleddin Bey designed Medreset-ül Kuzat’ı, meaning Judges’ Medrese, in the years 1910-11. Construction was completed in 1913. It was built on the hamam of Ibrahim Pasha Complex that was due for demolition. After the declaration of the Republic when medreses were closed in 1924 under the Law of Unification of Education and Secular Education, the building was bequeathed to Istanbul University as its central library.
The iron supported brick arch building has a facade of austere appearance. In contrast, the vertical circulation areas connected with wide vestibules, arches, columns capped with muqarnas and large windows offer rich perspectives in the inner space.
