ARCHITECT KEMALEDDIN: A LIFE AT ONE OF HISTORY'S TURNING POINTS (1870-1927)   | 1870-1909

Structural engineering and architecture are taught together at the historical Muhendishane (Hendese-i Mulkiye) in Halıcıoğlu, which Kemaleddin starts attending in the second class. Kemaleddin shows more interest in Prof. Jasmund’s architecture classes than in engineering classes. Nevertheless, his training as an engineer makes itself felt in all his designs.

When the construction of Sirkeci Railway Station designed by A. Jasmund commenced in 1888 Kemaleddin was still a student. Jasmund chose him as his assistant. He worked on the construction of the station. This must have been an opportunity for him to learn and think about Orientalism.
