The Voice of the Place: What Ulus Business Centre has to Say |
Public Space / Public Building
If for individuals an important denominator of being ‘a town-dweller’ is sharing and experiencing the city with other townsfolk, being aware of other citizens and feeling a part of the whole, an important denominator in buildings being able to become ‘town-dwellers’ is ‘providing possibilities’ for this sharing, experiencing and being aware. Buildings have a responsibility for being a ‘town-dweller’, especially in the organisation of public spaces. With this organisation they are citizens in as far as they provide possibilities for certain activities to exist, for the enjoyment of what is encountered and known, for observing and being observed, and even for being in contact, listening, resting and being in accord. Buildings only create possibilities, they define the ‘mechanics’ of being a city-dweller. The rest is up to ‘the citizens’.
