SPACES OF LOVE AND DEATH IN HALIT REFIG MOVIES |
Vurun Kahpeye [Beat the Slut] (1973)
Squares are spaces of different activities where people come together. We can get clues about the social structure by observing around which buildings the squares are formed and the activities they host. In that regard, the squares are spaces that reflect the culture, values and beliefs of societies.
The film, adapted from a novel of Halide Edib Adivar, is the story of those who fight for the freedom of the country, a teacher, Aliye, who fights for modernization and their conflict with the obscurantists’s fake beliefs. This conflict is revealed in public spaces and out doors, where they touch each other the most. In this scene, the square is the space of the social hysteria.
