Spaces of Love and Death in Halit Refig Movies | Hanim [Lady] (1989)

Our personal relationships to spaces reveal their immaterial dimensions. This dimension is shaped with the meanings we put on them. House is the space with which we interact the most; it is the space where we give meanings and reflect ourselves the most.

Mrs. Olcay, an old lady with an incurable illness waits for her death. Meanwhile, she defends her old wooden house like her last fortress of the lost values; resists not to sell it. Mrs. Olcay identifies with her old wooden house and her old wooden house identifies with the concept of ‘gentleman’ which in return represents the old Istanbul culture. But again 'all those familiar wooden houses disappear' with their people. Mrs. Olcay, too, would hold on to her house until the end. The house on which she reflected her personality and that reflects her being.
