Gurbet Kuslari [Expelled Birds] (1964)
Even the cities that we have not seen yet have their place in our memories with their silhouettes, panoramic images or important buildings. We add the feelings they awake in us to their photographic or filmic images in order to contrast in an unknown future with what we will see for real.
This film narrates the story of a rural family migrating to the big city, Istanbul. The city is a background where we read the contradictions, differences and incompatibilities. The images of buildings and streets accompany the dreams, passions, trials to build a life, disappointments and hopelessness. Cultural and social differences are narrated through spaces.
Fatos, the daughter of the immigrant family, ends up on a rooftop while running from his brothers. In this scene, describing the individual’s lost to the big city, she is alone, weak and helpless against the insecure silhouette.
