Department of Architecture 1883 - 1928

1883- 1928 SCHOOL OF FINE ARTS.   | Department of Architecture 1883 - 1928

The Department of Advanced Architecture which began its teaching at the same time as the Academy of Fine Arts was opened, provided a four-year advanced course of instruction. The students who entered this departmen had to first graduate from high-school and then pass an examination in proficiency. The first teacher of practical architecture at the Department was Alexandre Vallaury who continued as head of the Department until 1908.

Philippo Bello joined the staff of the Advanced School of Architecture as an assistant teacher of classes in practical architecture and, in 1909, Giulio Mongeri was appointed as studio instructor, while in 1911 (Yervant) Terziyan Efendi and Zare Efendi also took up posts there. These names indicate the preponderance of foreign teachers at the school at that time. The foremost names in Turkish Architecture, Vedat Bey (Tek) and Kemaleddin Bey, were only allowed to teach classes in architectural theory. However, when Mongeri left in 1915, Vedat Bey was appointed studio instructor and Asım Komurcuoglu and Kemaleddin Bey became responsible for the teaching of architecture. In 1923 Sirri Bilen began to teach classes in the History of Architecture and later added courses in other subjects.
