1883- 1928 School of Fine Arts.
It was recommended that the series of exhibitions at the Faculty of Architecture, MSGSU, entitled "People Who Influenced Education in Architecture" should be transposed into the Architectural Museum. We would like to thank the Faculty of Architecture for this valuable contribution to our collection.
On the occasion of 122nd anniversary of its founding, the Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University decided to organize an inclusive exhibition at the Faculty of Architecture under the title "People Who Influenced Education in Architecture" in order to commemorate the efforts of these individuals and as a way of introducing them to the younger generation. The first exhibition covers the period extending from 1883, taken as the year in which education in architecture began, and ending in 1928 when the name of the foundation was changed from the Imperial School of Fine Arts to the Fine Arts Academy The second belongs to the years between 1928 and1964. The third exhibition under consideration has been reserved for those teachers at the university who contributed to and influenced the teaching of architecture from 1964 to 1982.
The Architectural Faculty at the Mimar Sinan University of Fine Arts is the first institution in our country to begin education in architecture as a profession in the modern sense of the word. Here, while to follow contemporary trends in architecture in every period has been considered obligatory, it has also been a principle to evaluate and preserve the historical legacy of the buildings bequeathed to this country from the past.
When the teaching of architecture first started at the Imperial School of Fine Arts, recourse was made to the architects of the time. Alxandre Vallaury, Giulio Mongeri and others began teaching in a master/apprentice style of relationship. The staff later increased with the inclusion of teachers such as Vedat Bey and Kemaleddin Bey, together with Prof. Dr. Sedad Hakki Eldem, who early showed his promise. These incorporated a new, rational trend in their professional teaching as well as in their architectural works done independently outside the institution.
These exhibitions have been organized to express the gratitude of present and future architects to those teachers of the past who have devoted themselves to the service of the architecture of this country and have educated so many students, including ourselves, for this profession. It is also to make known our. feeling that in order to preserve our name as a worthy institution, we must maintain our relationships with the past.
