Paolo Verzone   Vercelli 1902 - Torino 1986
1902, 12 October Paolo Verzone is born in Vercelli, to Carlo Verzone and Lina Boda.

1920 Graduates from the Lagrange High School of Science in Vercelli.

1920, 22 November – 1925, 21 November Reads Civil Engineering (Freshman no. 37) at the Regius Polytechnic of Torino and is awarded his degree with a score of 93/100.

1923-1928 Works as an apprentice at the studio of Pietro Betta in Torino, with Domenico Morelli and Felice Bardelli.

1925 Publishes his first paper, with Giuseppe Rosso, entitled Was the architect of S Andrew’s Italian or foreign?

1927 Presents his project for the expansion of the ex-St Joseph’s Institute in Vercelli.

1928 He wins the Competition for the Reconstruction of the Civic Theatre of Vercelli, together with the engineer Guido Allorio and the architect Giuseppe Rosso; the project is presented with the motto: “Honoris Patriae” The building is completed in 1930 under the direction of Allorio.

1928, 13 January The directors of the Camillo Leone Museum invite him carry out the restorations of the exposition center of Casa Alciati in Vercelli. Works begin on June 8 1930 and are completed on September.

1934 Publishes an obituary for Arthur Kingsley Porter on the “Bulletin of the Piedmontese Society for Archeology and Beau Artes”.

1935 Carries out a series of exploratory excavations around the Basilica of St Stephen in collaboration with the Superintendency of Verona.

1937 Designs the project and follows the works of restoration of the complex of St Andrew’s in Vercelli upon request of the Podestà Filippo Melchior. In the same year, obtains an official teaching position at the Carlo Alberto High School of Classics in Novara.

1937, 6 April Obtains the qualifications for a full professorship in History and Styles of Architecture.

1937 On June 28, appointed to the Course on Monumental Restoration by the Council of the Faculty of Architecture of Torino Polytechnic. On November 6 of the same year he takes over the course on Stylistic and Constructive Features of Monuments: these assignments are renewed until the 1944-45 academic year.

1938 Appointed to the course of History of Art, and History and Styles of Architecture, 1-year course.

1939 Joins the excavations of St Calogerus of Alberga, invited by the archeologist from Liguria, Nino Lamboglia.

1942 Becomes Full Professor of Stylistic and Constructive Elements of Monuments at Torino Polytechnic, maintaining the previously mentioned courses (Restoration until 1958).
Publication of the volume on Late medieval religious architecture in northern Italy.

1951, 13 July The Italian Ministry for Foreign Affairs informs the Torino Polytechnic and the Education Ministry that the canditature of Paolo Verzone for the chair of History of Architecture at Istanbul Technical University would be much appreciated by both the ministry and the Turkish university. On August 17, under intense pressure, the Council of the Faculty of Architecture “deliberates in favour of Prof. Verzone accepting a position teaching History of Architecture at Istanbul University [sic]”

1952-53 Assisted by Enrica Fiandra and Mukerrem Usman, he takes part in the works of the Archeological Mission of Side, in Pamphilia (Turkey), led by the Turkish archeologist Arif Mufid Mansel.

1954, 16 October The Council of the Faculty of Architecture of Torino Polytechnic decides to divide the Faculty into four institutes: Buildings, Arhitectural Composition, Building Elements and History of Architecture; direction of the latter is assigned to Paolo Verzone.

1956 Publishes his first essay on the churches of Hierapolis, Phrygia in “Cahiers Archélogiques”.

1957 Nominated Director of the Italian Archeological Mission in Hierapolis of Phrygia. Verzone remains director until 1978, and participates in subsequent campaigns until 1981.

1957-73 Begins the works of excavation and restoration of the Martyrium octagonus of St Philip in Hierapolis. From the first campaign, the Mission begins excavating the huge city theatre, whose restoration is now drawing to an end.

1962 Invited to teach at the biennial School for special purposes in Science and Graphic Art, annexed to the Faculty of Architecture of Torino, where he teaches History of Writing from 1962 to 1970, and History of Medieval Writing from 1970-73.

1967 Publishes the volume From Byanzium to Charlemagne.

1970 Transfers to the chair of History of Architecture A, while maintaining Stylistic and Constructive Elements of Monuments, caused by the re-organization of the Faculty of Architecture.

1972, 1 November Retires from teaching upon reaching 70 but continues to direct the Institute of History of Architecture until 1974 while pursuing his own research activities.

1977, 1 November Terminates his activities at Torino Polytechnic.

1978 Becomes the first faculty member of Architecture to receive the medal of Emeritus Professor.

1986, 3 September Dies in Torino.
