The Ministry of Finance Building

1925
Architects: Yahya Ahmet, Irfan (Engineer)

Although this was one of the first buildings of the Republican period, many additions have been made to it since. According to the first plans, it consisted of three main two-storey buildings with basements. These three main buildings jut out from beyond the connecting sections and were designed for use by three separate ministries. The left wing was for the Finance Ministry, the right for the Prime Minister's Office and the centre was used by the Ministry of Customs and Monopolies. The façade of the central section presents a more lively appearance than those of the others. The basement floor is faced with rustic stone. The ground floor is plain whereas the upper floor has decorative moulding around pointed arches. The mansard roof covering the building has wide eaves. The façade and interior are decorated with Seljuk and Ottoman motifs as well as blue tiles and stalactutes, leading the way towards the "First National Style of Architecture."
