Architect and caricaturist.

On completing an education gained in various different towns in Anatolia he graduated from the Department of Architecture, Academy of Fine Arts (now the Mimar Sinan University), in 1963. From 1963 to 1966 he worked in the same institution as assistant to Prof. Sedad H. Eldem in the Department of Building and Vocation. He later turned to caricature, films and cartoon films.

In 1969 he joined the Artists' Association, becoming the head of the association in 1971. He drew cartoons for newspapers and periodicals such as Ant, Yeni Gun, Yansima and Ozgur Insan. In 1971 he produced two films for the Dostlar Theatre to be used in productions of "The Good Soldier Schweick" and "Zemberek". Between 1973 and 1979 he was a member of the executive committee of the Caricaturists Association, as well as holding at times the position of secretary and chairman, the latter three times. He worked on the Aksehir Nasreddin Hodja Cartoon Competition. In 1976 he began for the first time to produce daily cartoons in the Politika newspaper. He later transferred to Cumhuriyet.

In 1980-1984 he worked in Mimar Sinan University High School for Applied Industrial Arts as a lecturer in cartoon film training. Beginning in 1991he spent fifteen years in the Eskisehir Anadolu University Academy of Fine Arts Department of Animation Arts and in the Yildiz Technical University.

Tan Oral had always concentrated on simplicity in his works, and he continued this simplicity in his drawings, showing the same devotion to simplicity in his cartoons. He wrote several articles on caricature and took part in interviews with Turkish and foreign caricaturists. He contributed to various exhibitions and albums both at home and abroad. He exhibited in Germany (Darmstadt, Munich), Greece (Rhodes, Athens), Cyprus, France (Strasbourg) and Rumania (Petroşani). At present he is a contributor to the Cumhuriyet newspaper and a number of magazines.

He was awarded prizes in the TMTF International Culture Festival Caricature Competition (1967) and the Gayrettepe Picture Competition (1969). He won first prize for his film "Cumartesi Pazar" in the Hisar Short Film Competition (1960), while his animated film "Sansur" was awarded First Prize in TRT Culture, Art and Documentary Competition (1970), and honorary mention in the Skopje International Cartoon Competition (1978). He was chosen Cartoonist of the Year by the Ankara Contemporary Journalists Association in 1980-81, 1983, 1984, 1985 and 1992. He was also awarded the Journalist Achievement Prize in 1989, 1990, 1991 and 1993-94, and the Press Service to Health Award (1990) by the Istanbul Journalists Association. He was awarded the Excellence Prize in the Japanese Yomiuri Simbun Cartoon Competition (1983) and second prize in the Skopje Satirical Posters Competition. He was awarded the Golden Pen Prize in the Deventer Cartoon Festival (2001), the prize for the Best Press Artist (2002) and the Aksehir Nasreddin Hodja prize (2003).

His principal works include "Sansur" (1977), "Boyuk Turkiye", (1978), "Iki Minik Kentli" (1980), "Gozagrisi" (1986), "Sus ve Dinle" (1989), "Pencereler" (1993), "Istanbul" (1986), "Yaza Cize" (1998), "Yuruyenler" (1999) and "Bu Kitabin Kuyrugu Var" (2003).
