Nisa Theatre

Antalya, Kalkan, Sütleğen Village

The south-facing small theatre of Nisa is located just below the peak of the slope facing the village. The stone-faced road passing right behind this theatre at the height of its uppermost level is in good condition. The two central radial stairways of this theatre whose cavea is overgrown with thorny scrub connect with this road. However, it should be pointed out that a stone kerb 2 feet in height forms a barrier to animals and floodwater from the road. Between the two radial ways on the uppermost row of benches is seating with backboards for 12 people. Behind these seats rectangular blocks are arranged to a height of 5 feet. The function of these blocks is to define and preserve the boundary between the row of seats and the road behind them. This little two level theatre has 9 rows on each level making a total of 18 rows. There are six radial stairways. The governors’ section on the elevation right next to the stage measures four feet by nine feet. The radial stairways are unusual in that the rows of seats are carved out between them and irregular steps can be seen which continue for only 3-5 steps and do not go up to anywhere. This is evidence of attempts to find solutions when the necessity arose. The door to the stage building, which is still standing, and the low supporting wall at the edge of the orchestra are sound. The small support wall below the second level is four feet wide together with the horizontal central walkway. The orchestra has a radius of 22 feet. The support walls at both ends of the spectator rows have survived. It is a theatre of the early period. The stage building may have stood to a height of 30 feet.

Local measurements indicate that the theatre had a capacity of approximately 800 people.
