Muzaffer Bey
1881 - 26 March 1920 Konya
Muzaffer Bey is remarkable for his fascinating artistic personality as well as the wide range of work achieved in the course of a comparatively short lifetime. He is particularly well known as the architect of the Abide-I Hürriyet (Liberty Monument).
On graduating from the Mühendishane-i Berrî-i Hümayun (Imperial School of Engineering) and the Hendese-I Mülkiye Mektebi (Imperial College of Mathematics) he began work in the office of the architect
Vedat Tek
. Here, besides preparing architectural drawings and projects, he worked on the construction of some of the most important buildings in Istanbul designed by Vedat Bey, such as the General Post Office at Sirkeci, Hoca Hubyar Mesjid and the Land Registry Building at Sultanahmet. In the period following the proclamation of the Second Constitution he combined these activities with work as a member of the Kadastro Fen Heyeti (Registry Science Committee) and as assistant teacher of architecture in the Hendese-i Mülkiye Mektebi. When Vedat Bey was appointed Head Court Architect, Muzaffer Bey was appointed architect to the Ministry of Post and Telegraph. He also undertook the preparation of the pictures for the postage stamps to be printed in London at that time and of the pictures depicting national works of architecture.
In the course of his work in the Ministry of Post and Telegraph he worked on post office buildings brought from the UK, France, Germany and Italy, and produced a new series of projects for certain post offices.
He won the competition for the memorial to those who fell in the Incident of 31 March. His success in a competition in which distinguished architects such as
Kemaleddin Bey
, Vedat Tek and
Alexandre Vallaury
also took part earned him considerable celebrity.
After the erection of the monument Muzaffer Bey left his position as architect to the Ministry of Post and Telegraph and went to Konya as head architect for the province. There he built the Konya School for Boys, the Girls College for Primary School Teachers, the Ziraat (Agriculture) Monument and the General Assembly building. He also worked on repairs to the Selimiye Mosque. Owing to the deterioration of his health some of the work was taken over by the architect Falih Ülk
