Latmos (Herakleia) Theatre

Aydın, near Lake Bafa, village of Kapıkırı

Latmos theatre, which has come to resemble an olive grove, has not yet been subjected to a scientific excavation. Moreover, since the marble of its benches has been moved to other places very little seat covering has remained. The borders of the cavea of the theatre of Latmos, which has features characteristic of the early period, are clearly defined. The cavea is carved out of the rock with a gradient of 30 degrees. It may have a total of 15 rows. The two supporting walls at the row ends are partially standing. One example of a seating bench discovered in the wall of the arable field behind the theatre has survived. The orchestra has a radius of 29 feet. The cavea possibly has four radial ways. The hollow resembling a mihrab carved out of the wall of rock opposite the radial way in the mid section hollowed out of local rock is reminiscent of the Dionysian cult of the early era. The lower sections of the benches under the marble cladding were constituted by lining up rough stone and in places by cutting the local stone.

Latmos theatre holds about 1,400 people according to measurements made on site.
