Kyon Theatre

Muğla, near Yatağan, village of Çamyayla

Houses surround the theatre built into the slope. In the monotheistic Christian East Roman era when there was little interest in theatres a structure was built that cut into the cavea. The workmanship of the rows of seating resembles that of the benches in the theatre of the neighbouring town of Hyillarima. Thirteen of these carefully worked rows have survived to date. As the boundaries of the cavea have been lost it is not possible to estimate the seating capacity of the theatre, although it may be a single level structure. A municipal car park now covers the orchestra pit and a number of rows of seats. Parts of the theatre of the Carian city of Kyon that have survived have features characteristic of the Roman era. No excavation or investigation has as yet been conducted. This structure, which has lost its boundaries, gives the impression of being a small theatre.
