Kelainai Theatre
|
Afyon, Dinar
The theatre is on the hillside where the ancient city of Kelainai was founded. It faces southwest. The theatre’s top row of seats is set down from the plain on the hill where the ancient city ruins are. The reason for this could be to protect it from flooding by water that might accumulate there. Even though no formal excavation has been carried out, a small section of the seating benches and the support wall on both sides are above ground. The row ends are decorated with lions’ feet. Apart from a very small section of the cavea, the theatre leans on the slope. The stage edifice is 27 feet wide, and 62 feet long. The theatre seats approximately 7,000 people.
