Idebessos Theatre

Antalya, Kumluca, Karacaören village

The theatre of Idebessos, which means “in the trees” in the Luwi language, is in the forest facing west outside the city walls. It is approximately 900 meters above sea level. It is full of trees. All around it are big family tombs of the Lycian type. Apart from treasure hunters, no serious excavations have been conducted on Idebessos and knowledge of its theatre is limited, although it is thought to have been renovated in the second century BC. A section of the seats in the cavea is visible. The orchestra arena is full of accumulated earth up to the level of three or four rows of seats. Considering the upper boundary of the theatre and the gradient, there must be 17 rows of seats. The cavea has four radial stairways.

According to evaluations made on site, the theatre has a capacity of approximately 550 people.
