Franz Hillinger

Franz Hillinger was born in Nadyivarad, Hungary. He graduated from ‘Technische Hochschule Berlin- Charlottenburg’ in 1922 and until 1924 he mainly designed single family houses. He started working with Bruno Taut and Martin Wagner in 1924 and became the lead architect in the design sector of GEHAG. Meanwhile, in 1931, he began teaching at Charlottenburg Technische Hochschule as Taut’s assistant. He had to leave GEHAG in 1933 because of the Nazis and after that, until 1937, he worked underground designing private houses. In 1937, he arrived in Turkey to join Bruno Taut. He worked as the design architect of the Ministry of education and started lecturing at the Fine Arts Academy. He was the director of the School of Architecture in Ankara from 1940 to 1943. ın 1951, he went to Canada, trying to get into the United States. From 1953 to 1956, he was in Ankara, in charge of the supervision of the construction of the Parliament Building which was built after the desgin of C. Holzmeister. In 1956, at the age of 61, he immigrated to the United States and worked with some New York City firms. He died in 1973 in New York.
