Dumlupinar Memorial

1963 - 1964
Architects : Levent Aksut, Yasar Marulyali

This memorial was begun in 1963, in accordance with the design chosen for a symbolic monument and the landscaping of the area around Zafertepe where the monument was to be set up, by means of a two-stage competition held by the National Defence Ministry. The form of the monument was influenced by the requirements of a document written by former President Ismet İnönü. This reflected the desire that
the memorial "should be built by chosen craftsmen in remembrance of past generations and as an inspiration to those of the future."

The monument, composed of triangular walls placed at different angles varies in height from 3 m to 17 m. The walls are placed so as to create an interior open space. The walls which are 70 cm thick are composed of reinforced concrete faced with purple granite. The blocks used as facing material are placed parallel to the planes of the triangular walls. The dynamic unity of the monument is in keeping with the rock-strewn nature of the area. The area around the monument contains a ceremonial parade-ground, an exhibition area, spectator-stands, a first-aid centre and camping area for soldiers taking part in the parades, living accommodation, car parks and grassy areas.
