Doner Kumbet

The Doner (Revolving) Kumbet is a twelve-sided building of the Seljuk period with a conical roof. It is constructed entirely of cut stone. It is surmounted on the outside by a conical roof set on a muqarnas cornice while on the inside the cylindrical chamber is roofed with a dome. It displays a rich plastic figurative decoration including winged, human-headed leopards, double headed eagles, lions and date palms. The lion figure and tree of life motifs are thought to indicate the survival of in Islam of the old shamanistic beliefs, according to which the shaman ascended heaven by means of the tree of life. The lion depicted beside the tree of life was its defender.
