Diocaesarea - Prakana Theatre

Mersin, Silifke, Uzuncaburç

Diocaesarea theatre is a southeast facing theatre with two levels. According to an inscription on one of heap of stones from the stage building, the theatre was constructed in the time of Roman emperors Marcus Aurelius (AD161–180) and Lucius Verus (AD161–169). In the same era, Elaiussa-Sebaste theatre on the coast was also completed with the aid of these two governors. The central walkway between the two levels is six feet and ten inches in width. A row of benches with backboards was placed along the front boundary of the walkway to ensure upward continuity of sound. Three vaulted entrances open onto this walkway. The arch of the central entrance and the side walls of the entrances on the left are still standing. In the first level there are 18 rows of benches and six radial stairways. Ten rows of benches can be counted in the second level. The orchestra has a radius of 26 feet.

It has a capacity of 3,100.
