Ankyra Theatre

Ankara

Ankyra theatre is located on the hillside at the foot of the citadel just on the left of the road leading to the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations. It bears characteristics of the buildings of the Roman Era. No formal excavations have been carried out except for the stage edifice. The theatre is estimated to have two echelons and the radius of the orchestra is almost 24 feet. Looking from the cavea, it can be seen that the vaulted cradle entrance, which facilitates entry to the first echelon and orchestra from the left hand side, has been excavated and is out in the open. This theatre displays the advanced engineering skills of the Romans. Its orchestra is a semi circle and its stage edifice is adjacent to the seating benches of the audience. The radius of the orchestra is 24 feet and four inches. In the first echelon there are traces of five radial stairways. In accordance with this, the second echelon must have had nine radial walkways. The theatre, which is constructed with andesite from the Ankara region, was probably renovated in the second century B.C. The vaulted entrance opening up onto the orchestra and the ruins of the stage edifice have survived until today. The height of the stage edifice must have been approximately 32 feet.
