Amos Theatre

Turunç Village, near Marmaris

The name Amos is thought to come from the Luvi word Amuwa. In antiquity access to Amos by sea was easy while access by land was difficult. For this reason the city was ruled throughout the ages by the Kingdom of Rhodes directly across the water.

To get to the theatre on a hill of the Carian city of Amos it was necessary to pass two different walls of the city. The northwest facing single level theatre was built at an altitude of 88 metres above sea level. The rows of seats were built in straight lines. In total there are 20 rows. The stage building is a rectangle nearly 40 feet in length. Its ruins are still on the site. The height of the stage building must have been about 14 feet. It has not yet been excavated.

Judging by the measurements of the borders of the cavea the theatre had a seating capacity of approximately 1,300 people.
