Reha Gunay’s book "Mimar Sinan ve Eserleri", the English title of which is "Sinan The Architect and His Works", Introduces the architect and gives details of the basic specialities of Sinan‘s principal works which are illustrated by the author’s own photographs. The third edition of this book has been enlarged by additional photographs as well as a rewritten section on the Architectural Analysis of Sinan’s works. Gunay takes care to be objective in his descriptions, merely giving space to observations and some comparative details. His book groups Sinan’s works according to whether they are institutional complexes, mosques, in accordance with the number of their supporting pillars, medreses, or private buildings. He examines the development of the interior space, construction techniques, materials and other details in a separate section.

Turks. A Journey of a Thousand Years, 600-1600
The exhibition, "The Turks-A Journey of a Thousand Years, 600-1600", held at the Royal Academy of Arts in London, has attracted more attention than any other exhibition held there in recent years. The book about the exhibition contains articles by the foremost of the world’s experts on Turkish history including Filiz Çagman, Nazan Olçer, Serpil Bagci and Zeren Tanindi. The breath-taking journey of theTurks from China to the Balkans is shown through selected masterpieces from Topkapi Palace Museum, the Museum of Turkish and Islamic Art and from collections in Europe, Russia and the USA, which reflect the wide geographical area over which they spread their cultural and religious influence. The book, as well as the exhibition itself, introduces the Turks’ ideas about themselves and their history through the presentation of particularly interesting details, and awakes questions which have, perhaps, never been considered up to this time.

Displaying The Orient: Architecture of Islam at Nineteenth Century World's Fairs
"Displaying the Orient", which takes as its basis the way in which Islamic culture was represented in 19th century world fairs, explains how the social, political and cultural leanings were revealed in the architectural language of the national pavilions erected at these exhibitions. The book shows that the thinking behind the way in which the exhibition space was arranged, while reflecting the idea that the Western powers felt the established world order was theirs alone, makes it easier to understand the changes taking place both in the world of Islam and in the West. In her work, Zeynep Çelik scrutinizes the relationship between cultures within the framework of the universal exhibitions of the time and presents the view that Europe was not the only actor on the complex stage of the 19th century world. She stresses that the world of Islam, even if it did not have an equal share in the dialogue between Islamic and Western cultures, had an individual and influential voice.

Architecture of Constantinople / Die Baukunst Konstantinopels
The book written between 1907 and 1912, present a complete account of the architectural scene in Istanbul. It is, however, one of the most complete works to be undertaken up to that time. The German Ambassador, Fieldmarshal von Bieberstein, was instrumental in gaining permission for him to take photographs and draw sketches of mosques and other religious edifices so that Gurlitt was able to put into his book many architectural works that had never been presented before. In his book, Gurlitt evaluates the architectural movement which began at the time when Istanbul came under Turkish rule as a Renaissance different from and independent of the one which began in Italy. Examining the buildings of the Byzantine and Ottoman periods in chronological sequence, Gurlitt includes both photographs and detailed sketches of these.

Design and Crime (and Other Diatribes)
Hal Foster discusses the place of architecture and design, art and criticism within a culture. The first part examines the way in which marketing and culture are becoming increasingly interwoven. Design culture, which continuously pervades daily life today, depends on the indexing of characteristic logos. Articles by two of the architects in favour today, Frank Gehry ve Rem Koolhaas, bear witness to the ties which exist between the world of show and the global city. In the second part., quotations from modern writers, such as Baudelaire and Valéry, are touched on in examining and evaluating the historic tie between modern art and the modern museum. Views which underlie art history and art criticism, and the hegemony of the cult of visual communication are followed up. Questions relating to the future of modernism and post-modernism are asked.

YarismaIar Dizini 1930-2004 (Index of Competitions 1930-2004)
"Yarismalar Dizini" aims to present a complete record, in so far as this is possible, of all the available documents concerning the architectural competitions which have been held in Turkey since the beginning of the Turkish Republic. It, therefore, represents in itself something beyond the normal outlines of the history of the Republic by documenting the choice of works on which the competitions were based and the criteria for choosing them, and also brings to light, in civilian architecture at least, the changes and revolutions in the area of the competition. This book, covering a wide period of time, is more of a reference book than a work of historical research. Information on the sources - the periodicals, books etc. published about the competitions held and the results of these-.is given.

80 Yilda Devr-i Turkiye: 80 Kare Ankara
The exhibition "Ankara: Reflections on the last 80 Years" organized for the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the founding of the Republic, includes an album of photographs from the 1920s until the present day. These are arranged in ten year cycles and document the changes and developments in Ankara during those times. According to Ali Cengizkan it is not a city which has grown in a settled way but rather a city 'built on dreams' ; its aim was to be a model for the cities of the Republic and this is reflected in the problems the newly developing city had to face. We can see the living realities of these changes in the photographs which cover the development of public spaces and the education of the citizens in how to use such public areas, as well as the requirements for dwelling spaces, even to the shape and model of these.

Latin Catholic Buildings in Istanbul. A Historical Perspective (1839-1923)
"Latin Catholic Buildings in Istanbul: A Historical Perspective (1839-1923)" was realized after much research and detailed investigation in the Ottoman State archives in the Archives of the Prime Ministry, Istanbul and the archives concerning the Latin Catholic Churches in Istanbul and in the relevant libraries. The work takes up the history ,legal status and organization of the Latin Catholics in Istanbul who have been here since a mission was established in the city in the 13th century. Following the proclamation of a constitution (Tanzimat Fermanı), the number of churches, schools, hospitals and cemeteries increased rapidly and these institutions constitute a secondary field for research. The book provides architectural details, in particular those such as blueprints, elevation and interior layout of the constructions, examples of pictures and statues grouped according to each building, as well as a map showing the place of each within the city.

Turk Mimari Anitlari Osmanlı Devri Bursa'da Murad I ve Bayezid I Yapilari
Sedat Cetintas' drawings of Ottoman buildings in Bursa was published in two volumes under the titles "Turkish Architectural Monuments in Bursa from the Early Ottoman Period" and "Turkish Architectural Monuments in Bursa from the Ottoman Period : the Complexes of Murad I and Bayezid I" respectively. Today these books are to be found only in the "Rare Books" section of libraries or second-hand book dealers, although a great number of the drawings are found in books on the subject of Ottoman architecture. The books include 16 plates on "First Works in Bursa" and 37 plates on "Bursa: the Complexes of Murad I and Bayezid I". However, the introductory text is at least as important as the drawings. In this section, Cetintas not only reflects a knowledge of the historical and architectural details of the buildings he examined but also describes what damage he saw and compares his findings with those contained in works which preceded his. .

The First Ottoman Capital Bursa
The first book in the series "Former Ottoman Capitals" is on the subject of Bursa; in it the photographs reflect a 19th century view of the city. One section of it was obtained from archives in the Getty Research Institute . The views of Bursa as seen through the viewfinders of photographers such as Sébah & Joallier, Papazyan, Tremaux, and Berggren, present a rich source of material for those interested in either the history of the city or the history of photography. The book documents the streets and buildings which had survived to that day and more importantly the photographs show in addition to the buildings of these streets, the natural surroundings, and the people in them. Thus it gives historians of architecture the opportunity to fill these spaces which are left empty in mere plans and reliefs of buildings. .

Celal Esad Arseven occupies an important place in the modernization of Ottoman Art through the enlightenment he provided to the generation he taught; he also attracts attention due to his wide range of interest in art. He was thoroughly versed on the subject of city monographs and the decorative arts. His book published in France in 1909 under the title "Constantinople, from Byzantium to Istanbul," and later in Istanbul under the title "Old Istanbul: Its Monuments and Temples", is an important source today for those doing research into the history of the city. In"Old Istanbul", Arseven examines Byzantine Istanbul which, in Charles Diehl's words, had up to that time been monopolized by scholars from the native Greek population, the French, the Russians, the Germans and the English. He describes the history of the city and its development in Byzantine times and includes photographs or drawings of Byzantine works extant in the late 19th century. A faithful copy of the Ottoman text was transliterated into Roman characters and published in 1989 by the Celik Gulersoy Foundation under the title of "Old Istanbul (Monuments and Foundations)".
