The Function of Form
In The Function of Form, internationally acclaimed architect, Farshid Moussavi, provides a provocative critique of the historically opposing relationship between function and form to reveal the contradiction at the heart of modernism. We need to move away from the definition of function as utility, she argues, to align it with how function is defined in mathematics, biology or music. Form, on the other hand, should be considered not only in the way buildings are produced, but also how they perform sensorially. Function and form, considered together in architecture, stand in opposition to the dualism which defined our approach to the built environment throughout the twentieth century. This book provides a thought-provoking account of the challenges facing the 21st century built environment, and an enlivened awareness of the wider possibilities of architectural form.

The Eyes of The Skin: Architecture and the Senses
Architecture has the capacity to be inspiring, engaging and life-enhancing. But why is that architectural schemes which look good on the drawing board ot the computer screen can be disppointing in the flesh? The answer, argues Juhani Palasmaa, lies in the dominance of the visual realm in today’s techonological and consumer culture, which has pervaded architectural practice and education. While our exprience of the world is formulated by a combination of five senses, much architecture is produced under consideration of only one – sight. The suppression of other sensory realms has led to an impoverishment of our environment, causing a feeling of detachment and alienation. First published in 1996, The eyes of The Skin has become a classic of architectural theory and is required reading on courses in schools of architecture around the world. It consists of to extended essays. The first surveys the historical development of the ocularcentric paradigm in western culture since the Greek’s, and its impact on the experience of the world and the nature of architecture. The second examines the role of the other senses in authentic architectural experiences, and points the way towards a multi-sensory architecture which facilitates a sense of belonging and integration. Since the book’s first publication, interest in the role of the body and the senses has been emerging in both architectural phiosophy and teaching. This new, revies and extended edition of this seminal work will not only inspire architects and students to design more holistic architecture, but will enrich the general reader’s perception of the world around them. “Not since Danish architect Steen Eiler Rasmussen’s Experiencing Architecture (1953) has there been such a succinct and clear text which could serve students and architects at this critical time in the development of 21st century architecture.” Steven Holl

The Singular Objects of Architecture
This exhilarating dialogue between two of the most interesting thinkers working in philosophy and architecture today covers fundamental problems of politics, identity and aesthetics as their exchange becomes an imaginative exploration of the possibilities of modern architecture and the future of modern life. Among the topics the two speakers take up are Frank Gehry’s surprising Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, the limitations on innovative ideas, and a pre- 9/11 assesment of the importance of the World Trade Center.

HOW TO READ BUILDINGS: A Crash Course in Architectural Styles
This practical primer is a handbook for decoding a building’s style, history, and evolution. Every building contains clues embedded in its design that identify not only its architectural style but also the story of who designed it, who it was built for, and why. Organized by architectural element (roofs, doors, windows, columns, domes, towers, arches, etc.), the book is roughly chronological within each section, examining the elements across history, through different architectural styles, and by geographical distribution. Additional chapters offer overviews of how architecture has been affected by geography, history, and religion, along with an illustrated timeline of architectural elements. Also included is a chapter on applied ornament and a handy introduction to naming each part of a building. All entries are accompanied by examples in the forms of period engravings, line drawings, and pictures. The extended captions make the book invaluable for anyone who has ever pondered the meaning or importance of a hipped roof, rounded doorway, or classical pediment.
GATES OF PARADISE: Hürremşah Sculpture at the Divriği Ulucami and Şifahane
A book had been published with the support of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and the cooperation of YEM Publications and IKSV documenting the Divriği Complex, a unique building on the UNESCO World Heritage list and one of the most important architectural monuments in the world. The Photograph Exhibition of the Hürremşah Sculpture in the Gates of Paradise Divriği Ulucami and Şifahane, which introduced lovers of art and history to the Divriği Complex, generally accepted as the most magnificent monument surviving from the Anatolian Seljuk era, now forms the basis of a book published with the support of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and the cooperation of YEM Publications and İKSV. The book contains photographs not previously exhibited together with additional material by Doğan Kuban. The Divriği Ulucami and Şifahane, with their architectural concept, monumental sculptural quality and unique carvings are generally regarded as forming the most important Turkish medieval monument in the history of world art.The work is published with photographs taken by the architect/photographer Cemal Emden, texts written by Doğan Kuban, who has been publishing books and articles on the Divriği Complex since 1965 and the design and sponsorship of the architect Basri Hamulu.

THE ARCHITECTURE OF HAPPINESS
One of the great, but often unmentioned, causes of both happiness and misery is the quality of our environment: the kind of walls, chairs, buildings and streets we’re surrounded by.And yet a concern for architecture and design is too often described as frivolous, even self-indulgent. The Architecture of Happiness starts from the idea that where we are heavily influences who we can be - and argues that it is architecture’s task to stand as an eloquent reminder of our full potential.Whereas many architects are wary of openly discussing the word beauty, the book has at its centre the large and naïve question: ‘What is a beautiful building?’ It amounts to a tour through the philosophy and psychology of architecture, which aims to change the way we think about our homes, streets and ourselves.

Accessible Architecture
"We would like to put it on record here, that we are born to live in common: our society is like a vault of stones placed together, which would collapse if one did not sustain the other." This quotation from Seneca, the Roman philosopher and statesman, is most appropriate to the present publication Accesible Architecture: Age and disabilty- friendly planning and building in 21st century.  The architect creates the space or, to quote Seneca, the "vault of stones", within which we daliy move. And because architecture is omnipresent in our lives, all of those who produce it, directly or indirectly, have aduty to society as a whole.Alongside architects, these individuals include interior designers, landscape architects, town planners and, above all, the political desicion makers, developers and users.

Sinan The Architect and His Works
Reha Gunay’s book "Mimar Sinan ve Eserleri", the English title of which is "Sinan The Architect and His Works", Introduces the architect and gives details of the basic specialities of Sinan‘s principal works which are illustrated by the author’s own photographs. The third edition of this book has been enlarged by additional photographs as well as a rewritten section on the Architectural Analysis of Sinan’s works. Gunay takes care to be objective in his descriptions, merely giving space to observations and some comparative details. His book groups Sinan’s works according to whether they are institutional complexes, mosques, in accordance with the number of their supporting pillars, medreses, or private buildings. He examines the development of the interior space, construction techniques, materials and other details in a separate section.

Turks. A Journey of a Thousand Years, 600-1600
The exhibition, "The Turks-A Journey of a Thousand Years, 600-1600", held at the Royal Academy of Arts in London, has attracted more attention than any other exhibition held there in recent years. The book about the exhibition contains articles by the foremost of the world’s experts on Turkish history including Filiz Çagman, Nazan Olçer, Serpil Bagci and Zeren Tanindi. The breath-taking journey of theTurks from China to the Balkans is shown through selected masterpieces from Topkapi Palace Museum, the Museum of Turkish and Islamic Art and from collections in Europe, Russia and the USA, which reflect the wide geographical area over which they spread their cultural and religious influence. The book, as well as the exhibition itself, introduces the Turks’ ideas about themselves and their history through the presentation of particularly interesting details, and awakes questions which have, perhaps, never been considered up to this time.

Displaying The Orient: Architecture of Islam at Nineteenth Century World's Fairs
"Displaying the Orient", which takes as its basis the way in which Islamic culture was represented in 19th century world fairs, explains how the social, political and cultural leanings were revealed in the architectural language of the national pavilions erected at these exhibitions. The book shows that the thinking behind the way in which the exhibition space was arranged, while reflecting the idea that the Western powers felt the established world order was theirs alone, makes it easier to understand the changes taking place both in the world of Islam and in the West. In her work, Zeynep Çelik scrutinizes the relationship between cultures within the framework of the universal exhibitions of the time and presents the view that Europe was not the only actor on the complex stage of the 19th century world. She stresses that the world of Islam, even if it did not have an equal share in the dialogue between Islamic and Western cultures, had an individual and influential voice.

Architecture of Constantinople / Die Baukunst Konstantinopels
The book written between 1907 and 1912, present a complete account of the architectural scene in Istanbul. It is, however, one of the most complete works to be undertaken up to that time. The German Ambassador, Fieldmarshal von Bieberstein, was instrumental in gaining permission for him to take photographs and draw sketches of mosques and other religious edifices so that Gurlitt was able to put into his book many architectural works that had never been presented before. In his book, Gurlitt evaluates the architectural movement which began at the time when Istanbul came under Turkish rule as a Renaissance different from and independent of the one which began in Italy. Examining the buildings of the Byzantine and Ottoman periods in chronological sequence, Gurlitt includes both photographs and detailed sketches of these.

Design and Crime (and Other Diatribes)
Hal Foster discusses the place of architecture and design, art and criticism within a culture. The first part examines the way in which marketing and culture are becoming increasingly interwoven. Design culture, which continuously pervades daily life today, depends on the indexing of characteristic logos. Articles by two of the architects in favour today, Frank Gehry ve Rem Koolhaas, bear witness to the ties which exist between the world of show and the global city. In the second part., quotations from modern writers, such as Baudelaire and Valéry, are touched on in examining and evaluating the historic tie between modern art and the modern museum. Views which underlie art history and art criticism, and the hegemony of the cult of visual communication are followed up. Questions relating to the future of modernism and post-modernism are asked.

YarismaIar Dizini 1930-2004 (Index of Competitions 1930-2004)
"Yarismalar Dizini" aims to present a complete record, in so far as this is possible, of all the available documents concerning the architectural competitions which have been held in Turkey since the beginning of the Turkish Republic. It, therefore, represents in itself something beyond the normal outlines of the history of the Republic by documenting the choice of works on which the competitions were based and the criteria for choosing them, and also brings to light, in civilian architecture at least, the changes and revolutions in the area of the competition. This book, covering a wide period of time, is more of a reference book than a work of historical research. Information on the sources - the periodicals, books etc. published about the competitions held and the results of these-.is given.

80 Yilda Devr-i Turkiye: 80 Kare Ankara
The exhibition "Ankara: Reflections on the last 80 Years" organized for the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the founding of the Republic, includes an album of photographs from the 1920s until the present day. These are arranged in ten year cycles and document the changes and developments in Ankara during those times. According to Ali Cengizkan it is not a city which has grown in a settled way but rather a city 'built on dreams' ; its aim was to be a model for the cities of the Republic and this is reflected in the problems the newly developing city had to face. We can see the living realities of these changes in the photographs which cover the development of public spaces and the education of the citizens in how to use such public areas, as well as the requirements for dwelling spaces, even to the shape and model of these.

Latin Catholic Buildings in Istanbul. A Historical Perspective (1839-1923)
"Latin Catholic Buildings in Istanbul: A Historical Perspective (1839-1923)" was realized after much research and detailed investigation in the Ottoman State archives in the Archives of the Prime Ministry, Istanbul and the archives concerning the Latin Catholic Churches in Istanbul and in the relevant libraries. The work takes up the history ,legal status and organization of the Latin Catholics in Istanbul who have been here since a mission was established in the city in the 13th century. Following the proclamation of a constitution (Tanzimat Fermanı), the number of churches, schools, hospitals and cemeteries increased rapidly and these institutions constitute a secondary field for research. The book provides architectural details, in particular those such as blueprints, elevation and interior layout of the constructions, examples of pictures and statues grouped according to each building, as well as a map showing the place of each within the city.

Sedat Cetintas' drawings of Ottoman buildings in Bursa was published in two volumes under the titles "Turkish Architectural Monuments in Bursa from the Early Ottoman Period" and "Turkish Architectural Monuments in Bursa from the Ottoman Period : the Complexes of Murad I and Bayezid I" respectively. Today these books are to be found only in the "Rare Books" section of libraries or second-hand book dealers, although a great number of the drawings are found in books on the subject of Ottoman architecture. The books include 16 plates on "First Works in Bursa" and 37 plates on "Bursa: the Complexes of Murad I and Bayezid I". However, the introductory text is at least as important as the drawings. In this section, Cetintas not only reflects a knowledge of the historical and architectural details of the buildings he examined but also describes what damage he saw and compares his findings with those contained in works which preceded his. .

The First Ottoman Capital Bursa
The first book in the series "Former Ottoman Capitals" is on the subject of Bursa; in it the photographs reflect a 19th century view of the city. One section of it was obtained from archives in the Getty Research Institute . The views of Bursa as seen through the viewfinders of photographers such as Sébah & Joallier, Papazyan, Tremaux, and Berggren, present a rich source of material for those interested in either the history of the city or the history of photography. The book documents the streets and buildings which had survived to that day and more importantly the photographs show in addition to the buildings of these streets, the natural surroundings, and the people in them. Thus it gives historians of architecture the opportunity to fill these spaces which are left empty in mere plans and reliefs of buildings. .

Celal Esad Arseven occupies an important place in the modernization of Ottoman Art through the enlightenment he provided to the generation he taught; he also attracts attention due to his wide range of interest in art. He was thoroughly versed on the subject of city monographs and the decorative arts. His book published in France in 1909 under the title "Constantinople, from Byzantium to Istanbul," and later in Istanbul under the title "Old Istanbul: Its Monuments and Temples", is an important source today for those doing research into the history of the city. In"Old Istanbul", Arseven examines Byzantine Istanbul which, in Charles Diehl's words, had up to that time been monopolized by scholars from the native Greek population, the French, the Russians, the Germans and the English. He describes the history of the city and its development in Byzantine times and includes photographs or drawings of Byzantine works extant in the late 19th century. A faithful copy of the Ottoman text was transliterated into Roman characters and published in 1989 by the Celik Gulersoy Foundation under the title of "Old Istanbul (Monuments and Foundations)".
